New iPod Shuffle 0 komentar

As always, Apple has dropped another new gadget without warning. The new iPod Shuffle is even smaller than its predecessor with the removal of the click wheel. The controls can now be found on the right earbud cord (similar to the iPhone 3G’s microphone controls).

With 1000 songs squeezed into its tiny frame and the voice over reading out the names of artist and songs (in 14 different languages), Apple has raised the bar again.

21st Century Technology for Interactive Eyeglasses 0 komentar

With the onset of the James Bond era, came the never ending hunger for more and more smart gadgets that would help us in various ways and save us a lot of time in accomplishing various tasks. Over the years, there have been numerous inventions that have taken the world by storm and have established themselves as the day-to-day tools within all walks of life.

A German research and development organization Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, today unveiled the next generation of eyeglasses that interact with the users in several ways via a connected PDA. The eyeglasses have been specifically designed for engineers and doctors, who have to perform critical jobs with surgical precision. This new gadget tracks the user’s eye movements via an ‘eye tracker’ that is embedded in the display of the glasses.

Interactive Eyeglasses 21st Century Technology for Interactive Eyeglasses

According to Dr. Michael Scholles (Business unit manager, Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS);

We want to make the eyeglasses bidirectional and interactive so that new areas of application can be opened up.

The German scientists claim that these eyeglasses will enable a user to access and view multiple documents and multimedia, even if their hands are not free to operate other devices such as a computer

The CMOS chip that is the heart and soul of these eyeglasses is situated behind the hinge of the frame and measures a minute 19.3 by 17 millimeters. The image that is to be viewed by the user is displayed by this chip onto the retina, thereby projecting a distance of one meter between the viewer and the object, hence reducing stress on the eyes. To ensure the clarity and sharpness of the image amidst the changing background contrast, the eyeglasses are embedded with OLED or organic light-emitting diodes.

As of now these glasses are being produced solely for high-precision jobs, however, if the cost of this immensely useful gadget is affordable, then the user applications are endless. From checking your email to video chat, various other interactive services could be accessed through these interactive sunglasses, if at all they are ever launched for the masses.

MP570 MP3 player 0 komentar

Coby may not always produce the sleekest of devices, but the company has certainly come through on that count with its new MP570 MP3 player, which is bound to turn a few heads. Questionably functional design aside, however, this one is about as basic as can be, with it packing just 2GB of flash storage and no memory card slot, support for only MP3 and WMA formats, and a built-in rechargeable battery that promises just five hours of audio playback -- but, hey, it sure is shiny. No word on pricing or availability just yet, nor is there any indication of how you're actually supposed to use it.

LG W2353 monitor 0 komentar

Monitor manufacturers have cottoned on to the fact that home users are spending just as much time watching video and playing games as typing documents and browsing the web. For this reason, most now incorporate various optimisation features designed to tailor the screen for specific environments, but few have gone quite as far as LG with its new W53 HD series.

The 23-inch version on test (the only model available in the UK, though rumour has it a 27-inch model will hit our shores later in the year) features a tidy enough piano-black design with a tilt stand and connectivity that includes HDMI, DVI-D and D-Sub. It’s a Full HD screen so is capable of 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080) at 16:9 aspect and offers a range of touch-sensitive controls to access the plethora of optimisation features available.

Perhaps the most useful of these is the Auto Bright function, which uses a built-in light sensor to analyse ambient conditions and adjust the backlight to optimum levels. This not only reduces eyestrain but is also kinder to the environment, since the screen isn’t pumping out unnecessary light. Elsewhere a "time control" feature alerts you to take a break when you’ve been working for a selected amount of time, and the control lights stay dark when not in use to reduce distraction, with a proximity sensor switching them on when a hand goes near.

One particularly interesting addition is the Cinema Mode. This is a separate installable application and allows you to draw a box around, most typically, a currently playing video, at which point the surrounding area is dimmed to draw focus to the content. This actually works very well, though in a practical environment it’d be used infrequently unless you’re very easily distracted. In addition to this all of the controls available on-screen are also available through a separate application, which may be preferable when experimenting.

Aside from these headline features, manual controls are available for screen adjustment, the screen can be switched to 4:3 to prevent video from being stretched and photographers can benefit from colour effects such as Gaussian blur, sepia and monochrome for effective editing.

Finally, a set of presets is available for movie, internet, game and custom environments via LG’s f-ENGINE optimisation technology.

This massive array of features is available via the touch-sensitive controls and though these are pretty well laid out, suffer a little from an inherent problem with this choice of operation, and until you get used to the layout expect to squint down at the screen to find the right button and multiple mashes with a thumb or finger are sometimes necessary to get a response.

Clearly it seems as though LG has prepared the W53 as a versatile all-rounder and the series ticks just about all boxes when it comes to modern advancements and conveniences. Luckily most of these work very well too, and features such as the Auto Bright and present environments do seem to make a distinct difference.

The display image is extremely clean and crisp and provided you remember to switch modes depending on the task at hand, can make a noticeable, improved difference when gaming or watching video. A 2ms response time means that fast-action clips are rendered very well, and our only real problem in terms of performance is that while black levels are very good, colours are often oversaturated which makes subtle hues difficult to distinguish. This can be improved somewhat by tweaking the manual controls, and though it’s rarely a problem until you get to HD video resolutions, we’ve seen better performance in this area elsewhere.

Compaq Q2009 LCD Monitor 0 komentar

Design

HP's Compaq Q2009 design is extremely pedestrian, but you'd expect that for a monitor in this price range. Its 20-inch LCD sits in a slightly rounded bezel with controls that run down the lower right-hand side. The stand is small, squat and plastic with a total tilt range of 30 degrees — 5 degrees forwards and 25 backwards. As with the recently reviewed HP 2309m, the monitor sits rather low on the average desk, and for most office working situations you'd be well served to place it on a thick phone book to ensure you're not craning your neck downwards at an awkward angle. At least that'll give you a use for phone books in this day and age, which is nice.
Features

The 20-inch LCD panel in the Q2009 has a top resolution of 1600x900 with a claimed contrast of 1000:1 and brightness of 300cd/m². Refresh rate is stated at 5ms, which very clearly marks this out as a productivity screen, not a gaming or video one. That's an observation that's confirmed by the fact that the Q2009 only has two inputs — and one of those is for audio. This is a D-Sub input only monitor, and that means it's never going to be the most thrilling in terms of visual fidelity.
Performance

The Q2009 shares the similar HP 2309m's menu layout, and this means that it uses a single button to bring up either viewing modes, volume levels or correction menus, with the other buttons then being used for up, down and selection duties. It's no doubt a cheaper way to wire a set of buttons for HP, but at the user end we find it a bit fiddly for practical use, as you've got to perform extra button presses for simple tasks such as audio selection.

On the audio front, there's a simple word that can be used to describe the Q2009's bottom mounted speaker: tinny. For website sounds and the odd bit of YouTube viewing it might just be passable, but it's unsuitable for any kind of nuanced music or gameplay function.

Over D-Sub we weren't expecting the Q2009 to do much to impress us in DisplayMate's tests, and indeed it didn't. Colours weren't particularly crisp, and greyscale reproduction topped out a little low, but it would be unrealistic to expect anything else. Gaming and video tests gave us the same essentially murky outlook, but again that's going to be par for the course over this kind of connection. It's certainly not unwatchable, but there are a lot of better panels out there, generally at higher starting RRPs.

The Q2009 is an absolute case of getting what you pay for. If you need a screen to plonk yourself in front of for text reading or web page viewing, it's fine for that task. If you want video, gaming or genuine colour reproduction, it's not fine for that task, and it's priced entirely appropriately.

The Philips 42PES0001 0 komentar

Following closely on the heels of Sony, the people at Philips have developed a new, thin HDTV which looks like a picture frame, allowing it to be hung on walls to provide 52-inch, 1080p LCD HDTV entertainment almost anywhere you want it. The new Philips 42PES0001 is one of the slimmest HDTV frames we’ve seen, measuring only 21mm in thickness. With a connectivity hub, you will only need to run a single cable to your HDTV, which transmits all of the necessary video, audio and power, thereby avoiding any unsightly tangled cables. Of course, if you so choose, you may mount your Philips HDTV on a stand instead of on the wall.

The dedicated 2x 15W speaker bar at the bottom of the set will give you great sound, or you can connect your own sound system and leave the speaker bar in the box. The Philips Perfect Pixel HD Engine that comes with the Philips 42PES0001 can process 500 million pixels per second, and 2250 trillion colors, which is more than enough to deliver incredible improvements in image quality, providing sharper pictures, incredible color and reduced noise. The 1080p LCD screen provides a phenomenal 2ms response time, and with a 66,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, you’ll get excellent picture quality as well as deep blacks and rich colors.

The 100Hz Clear LCD technology will double the frame rate, providing you with smooth flowing motion and no blurring of the images. DLNA networking has also been incorporated into the unit, allowing it to stream media from other networked devices.

The European Home Theater System 2008/2009 - LG HT953TV 0 komentar

The new HR953TV is a continuation in LG Electronic’s tremendous efforts to bring a sense of style and elegance to its long lineup of audio and video products. This ‘do-everything’ cinema system contains a built-in DVD player with 1080p-upscaling, giving you excellent video quality on your HD television.

The FM radio tuner, iPod connection and USB Plus port with direct recording are excellent features to have in any system, and are seamlessly incorporated into this one. The interesting keyhole design is easily activated by curious people passing by, and the flute-shaped floorstanding speakers provide a treat for both the eyes and the ears. Of course, you get the same high quality of audio that we have come to expect from all of LG’s products, and Mark Levinson, who almost single-handedly invented high-end audio some 30 years ago, has put his special touch to the LG HT953TV.

The Polaroid PoGo Printer 0 komentar

When Polaroid announced that it was going to stop making instant film, there was a lot of commotion around the globe. Now, this company is hoping to turn heads and make new friends by coming out with the Mini-PoGo (Polaroid on the Go) printer, which is a tiny printer which doesn’t require any ink to operate! By using the new ZINK (Zero Ink) technology, which uses paper embedded with heat-activated dye crystals, this printer can remain both portable and quiet.

All you need to do is send digital images from your cellphone or digital camera to this small printer, and you can easily print off whichever photos you like. The final result is a clear picture that is waterproof and durable. Although the picture quality isn’t fantastic, it’s passable, and we expect to see the technology continue to develop. Still, it’s not a replacement for instant film, so we’re still waiting for Polaroid to fit one of these printers into a digital camera.

Canon Announces Flagship Rebel T2i 0 komentar

February 8, 2009 - Canon kicked the Rebel line up a notch today with the introduction of the Rebel T2i, an 18-megapixel SLR that shoots 1080p video,

In addition to a resolution step-up (from the 15.1-megapixel T1i), the T2i provides a slightly faster burst rate (3.7 frames per second, versus 3.4 for the T1i) and an enhanced 3-inch LCD, with 1.04-million-dot resolution (T1i screen resolution is 920,000 dots). On the Rebel T1i, ISO 6400 is considered an extended setting, where it's an official numeric setting on the T2i. Both cameras can be pushed to ISO 12,800 as a Hi extended setting.

The T2i metering system uses the same has 63-zone sensor as the 7D, but adapted for nine focusing points (versus 19 on the 7D).

Both cameras offer high-def video recording at 1920 x 1080 maximum resolution, but the T2i provides a more usable 24 frames per second versus the choppy 20fps on the T1i. The T2i also adds the manual exposure controls found on the Canon 7D, along with an external microphone input for stereo audio.

As for camera size, the T2i and T1i are very close:

- T2i measures 5.1 x 3.8 x 3.0 inches and weighs 18.7 ounces.
- T1i measures 5.1 x 3.8 x 2.4 inches and weighs 16.9 ounces.

The T2i adds a dedicated movie recording button, along with a Movie Crop mode, which uses only the central part of the sensor to create an apparent 7x magnification on top of the optical zoom. Also of particular note for video recording fans is compatibility with high-capacity SDXC memory cards, which have been announced in 48- and 64-gigabytes sizes, and have a theoretical capacity of 2 terabytes.

The T2i will sell for $899 with the familiar 18-55 image-stabilized kit lens, or $799 for the body alone, with no release date announced.

The addition of the T2i coincides with the departure of the Rebel XSi. The lower-cost Rebel XS will remain in the line-up.

NASCAR Helmet with CD Player and Radio 0 komentar

We accept that the NASCAR Helmet may not be as cool and advanced as the Trace Helmet we reported before, but this new NASCAR Helmet is rather a traditional gadget that has the old CD support to play music. It also has a radio player built in but I am astonished that it doesn’t support playing music from you iPod or any device having 3.5 mm speaker jack.

This new music helmet also comes bundled with a remote control but it amazes me why a device like this would even have a need a remote. No matter how useless it may be to use, its design is what will attract people to use and buy it. It retails for $139.90 at Walmart and Features Tony Stewart’s car number 20 on its sides and back.

MBW-100 Bluetooth Watch 0 komentar

Just in time for its sister company’s release of Casino Royale, Sony Ericsson has introduced a new gadget even James Bond would be proud of - the MBW-100 Bluetooth Watch.

This beautifully designed timepiece ushers in a whole new chapter in Bluetooth accessories by providing the most discreet way to date to manage your cell phone. Imagine you are in a meeting with M and the Minister of Defence [sic] and Felix Leiter calls on your mobile to chat. With your phone pocketed away and in silent mode, reaching to answer it would be noticeably disruptive to your meeting. Instead, your timepiece discreetly vibrates to alert you to an incoming call. With only a slight turn of you wrist, your watch displays your caller’s number (or name if the number is stored in your phonebook). A discreet press of the crown and Felix is sent to voicemail for a later callback.

Other features of the MBW-100 include incoming text message notification and play/pause control of music functions. It will also alert you if you have traveled out of range of your cell phone, which is handy if you are the type to forget your phone somewhere.

The watch itself is a beauty. Designed in conjunction with watch giant Fossil, it’s got a sleek steel case with a polished/brushed bracelet and features a scratch-resistant mineral glass crystal. The crystal has an anti-glare coating to make the display easy to read. And, oh yeah… it even tells time!!! Actually, it will display the date and time from your phone, so you can easily set and synchronize the time on your wrist. The watch is a bit heavy (which is a positive in my book since it makes it feel more substantial), so it may take a little getting used to for some.

Comes with charger/cradle and retails for $399 on the Sony Ericsson site.

The iLuv iPhone Dual Dock with weather alerts 0 komentar

The later models of iLuv and so far have found it extremely convenient. Especially since I tend to flake on charging my iPod. Well now iLuv is offering a new gadget for us to drool over. This one has found its way to this year’s CES and won’t be out for a few more months, but they at least released a few details to draw in our interest. The dock has all the usual convenient speccs but with one extra to sweeten the deal. One great perk is that iMM183 will work with both your iPhone and iPod at the same time. That is as long as you have a 4th Gen or later iPod.

It features dual docks to help those of you that have both or a significant other with one as well. The dock has the regular features like a built-in alarm clock and is able to play your iPod/iPhone through the built-in speakers. It also has an FM radio and of course a way to plug in any other audio devices you have around. It also has an extra feature to do with the weather this time around. It has support for weather text alerts from NOAA and SAME that will automatically come through on the preset radio channels. It allows you to archive as many as 10 notices for ongoing situations as well as has an LED warning to show when there is a new alert. So far there is no price released, but it will be available in March.
