LG 37LE5300 Television Review–A Fairly Attractive Model 0 komentar

LG 37LE5300 Television Review–A Fairly Attractive Model
Last week we gave you some low-priced hardware to have a look at, and this week we’re going to step it up a notch by checking out some of the higher end LED televisions out there. But fear not, for some relatively decent deals will still be on hand here to boot. We start our journey with a look at the LG 37LE5300.

The LG 37LE5300 is a thirty seven inch 1080p LED television that offers TruMotion 120hz to reduce blurring in high speed shots, Smart Energy Savings to keep your power bill down, Intelligent Sensor to automatically adjust settings according to conditions, two ten watt speakers, an AV mode to further adjust settings according to specifics, 24p Real Cinema mode, Clear Voice II to improve dialogue, Dolby Digital decoders, four HDMI ports, two component inputs, two composite inputs, an RF input, a PC input, a PC audio input, a USB port, an optical digital audio output, and a headphone jack.

Lots of great stuff in this one, with just as much room for your new components as the old ones. The video is pretty good quality, though a little on the smallish side at thirty seven inches, and the sound isn’t the best but ten watts with a Dolby Digital decoder backing the play still isn’t bad. There’s a lot to like here and plenty of good value.

The price may be a little more than you’ll want to pay at right around eight hundred bucks, and you can do better, but the quality should be there–at least I thought it was pretty solid.

The LG 37LE5300 won’t be mistaken for the best value on the market, but it will do a nice job of supplying what you want in a television.

ViewSonic ViewPad 7 Review 2010 0 komentar

ViewSonic ViewPad 7 Review 2010
With the exception of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, most Andoid tablets we've tested have been marred by poor design, a lack of apps, lackluster performance, or all of the above. The Viewsonic ViewPad 7 ($459 starting in mid-December) is a cut above those also-rans. This device not only looks attractive, it has full access to the Android Market, lasts more than 7 hours on a charge, and can even be used to make calls--when you plug in a SIM card. However, compared to Samsung's slate, you'll have to make some sacrifices. Is the ViewPad 7 worth it or should you just spring for the Tab or iPad?

Editor's note: We've updated this review as of November 23, to reflect further 3G testing and additional information Viewsonic made available about video chat capabilities and Swype.

Design

While many tablets have been likened to oversized iPhones, the ViewPad 7 probably comes the closest to imitating Apple's design. But is that a good thing? Like the iPhone 4, both the front and back of the ViewPad 7 are glossy black, and the edges are bordered in a silvery plastic. While the overall look is somewhat sleek, it picks up and shows fingerprints fairly easily.

Overall, the 7.1 x 4.3 x 0.45-inch ViewPad 7 is about the same size and weight (13.2 ounces) as the Samsung Galaxy Tabs, but where the Tabs have a slightly rounded underside, the ViewPad 7's is flat, making the edges somewhat sharp, a la the iPhone 4. Still, it's comfortable to hold.

To the right of the display (in landscape mode) are the Android icons: Back, Search, Home, and Settings. Home is not the standard icon, which confused us initially. On the two short sides are small speaker grilles; next to one of them is the power button. The top of the ViewPad 7 has volume controls, as well as a plastic cover that protects the miniSD card and the SIM card slots. The bottom has a combo mic/headphone jack and a miniUSB port.

The Vizio XVTHP200 visits the FCC 0 komentar

The Vizio XVTHP200 visits the FCC
While Vizio is producing televisions like the M260VA and competing with Samsung, they are apparently making Active Noise Canceling High Definition Headphones.

Vizo’s XVTHP200 has a wireless dock for the iPod, and the device has visited the FCC. According to my Source, it features “music playback controls, active noise reduction, a mini USB port for charging, SRS audio processing and a 3.5mm input jack for audio input from other devices”.

Of course, we have no idea when the general public will get a hold of this, but it should be about $310.

NEC Lifetouch, 7 inches with Android 0 komentar

NEC Lifetouch, 7 inches with Android
During his IExpo (NEC an event held every year at this time), NEC has unveiled a tablet known as NEC Lifetouch touchscreen based Google Android operating system.

Equip with a 7-inch LCD screen, NEC Lifetouch is a tablet with cloud services, targeted primarily to professionals. The Japanese company wanted to bet on online services accessible through a simple browser, rather than fill the number system software. The decision may be shared to some extent, since there are currently very few applications optimized for Android tablet.

However, the size of the display (7 inches) would enable NEC gain access to Android Market. We do not know if in the future, the Japanese company provides an update to Android Froyo from Andorid 2.1 version installed by default in Lifetouch. The tablet should be provided with a 3G module, a feature necessary for a 7-inch device aimed at cloud computing. As for the rest of the budget, Lifetouch will integrate a WiFi module, Bluetooth, GPS, two USB ports, a SD card reader and a 0.3 megapixel camera.

NEC Lifetouch will have a solution for System-on-Chip (SoC) ARM Cortex. NEC will launch its Tablet in Japan starting this month, but not to the general public. The Japanese company wants to enter partnerships with other companies that could distribute his tablet with their brand. The price was not disclosed the intention of exporting it to Europe.

Haier HLC24XK2 Television Review–Surprisingly Ineffective 0 komentar

And a happy Black Friday to you all! We end our week of cheap televisions by taking a sad look at the Haier HLC24XK2, a television that will take the whole “get what you pay for” adage way, WAY too far, and not to the benefit of those who might shell out the cash, too.

The Haier HLC24XK2 is a twenty four inch 1080p LCD television that offers a built-in DVD player, two three watt speakers with SRS TruSurround, a digital comb filter, one HDMI input, one component video input, one PC input, one composite input, a headphone jack, a USB port, sleep timer and an included remote.

Something is very wrong with the Haier HLC24XK2. Despite the fact that they assure me that this is a 1080p picture, it doesn’t look very good. And despite the SRS TruSurround augmentation on the speakers, they really don’t sound all that great either. Maybe I just saw a bum unit, I don’t know. But this one I really don’t like.

And when you considering these are selling for about $287 each, well, I really can’t suggest these based on what I’ve seen of them so far. You may have a better experience when you see a Haier HLC24XK2 yourself, but this doesn’t work for me. [http://www.cybertheater.com]

HTC Wildfire Review 0 komentar

HTC has many firsts to its name and ever since the company joined the touch wagon, it was pretty vocal about what smartphones from its quarters are really capable of. With ‘Touch’ added to every phone name launched thereafter, a slight change of mind has also seen gems like Hero, Magic, Tattoo, Desire and Legend among others. HTC’s very recent trickery had enthusiasts glued upon a handset that was finally named Wildfire. The phone was interestingly christened after fans posted in their votes on the HTC Facebook page. Need we mention that having it on our desks for a review had us pretty excited? Dressed in black attire, here’s what our thorough inspection of the phone suggests.

The box offered with the phone included just the USB-enabled charger with a common USB cord. The phone adopts a curvaceous body in a rectangular form factor fitting the mid-weight space at 118gms; not heavy enough to weigh you down and not light enough to be called sleek. The large 3.2” QVGA capacitive screen sits flush on the phone’s frontal area and below it are four soft keys that illuminate when being used namely Home, Menu, Back and Quick Search. All this including the screen is seated in the phone’s glossy portion. A thin strip of scratched aluminum, below gets a matte finishing and right in between these two strips is a central metallic jog dial for navigation. The left chassis of the phone includes the volume adjustment which again has a metallic touch and along the end of this edge is the USB port. There’s nothing to hold attention on the right edge while a duo of speaker grilles are housed above the word HTC inscribed aloft the screen.

The topmost panel is fitted with a 3.5mm port and the power on/off button. Turn the phone over and the black aluminum surface extends from the front and edges of the phone to the back. HTC is etched in metal above this portion with the camera lens and other speaker mesh here. Below this are the words ‘With HTC Sense’. It takes more than a glance to figure out that the back flap of the phone extends to the front jaw and can be taken off. With the front face lying down, there’s a microSD card slot along the left end of the innards. There’s no comprehension needed why we disdain phones that let you do nothing without the microSD card and sadly this phone is one of them. So while we got the microSD card in place, the handset had already used a single bar of the battery. Operating on Android version 2.1, HTC has managed to put more than a bit of ‘Sense’ to this handset. The interface is intuitive and proffers up to seven customizable homescreens that let you add widgets and applications of your choice from among Widgets, Apps, Shortcuts and Folders.

We hopped onto the settings first to get started with the HTC Wildfire phone in just the way we wished. Starting with the Personalize option, we tweaked not just the scenes but also the wallpaper while also being able to lock it and set the default ringtone. There’s much you can do with Wireless & networks too. The option to edit and create a default message suiting your preference is a nice inclusion as well. We liked in particular how the phone offers to save unknown contacts after they call. Other than the regular activities, the Sound & display setting offers a Quiet ring on pickup option, the ability to choose how the haptic feedback of the touchscreen will feel and even SD card notifications. The G-sensor calibration should let you opt for orientation behavior though the phone does take quite some time to register transformation from the portrait to landscape mode. Setting up our Google account followed by syncing it with Calendar and contacts took under a minute and was a snap for sure. You can also tease the phone’s Search settings right from choosing what items can be searched to the Google search adjustments.

The touch keyboard for this HTC offering can be picked from among QWERTY, Phone Keypad and Compact QWERTY types. When we enabled prediction for the QWERTY keyboard it kept us more than happy with its suggestions, being almost accurate at times. Keying in messages on the QWERTY keyboard took more than a few days to get accustomed to and that’s when you’ll know how helpful the prediction feature is. We think the onscreen keys could have been wider instead of longer to identify presses more accurately. It’s much better in the landscape mode though and the threaded messaging ability is an interesting keepsake of talkfest. The User dictionary let us save, edit and delete words too for convenient future use while the included Text-to-speech feature should please road runners. The battery status attribute impressed us with the details it offered and told us that the latest version of Android is using a chunk of the battery life in the About Phone feature. The Maps feature is surprisingly very accurate and provided us with a detailed street view. The GPS satellite gets active almost instantly and you can’t miss the Footprints feature for location storing.

As far as internet access and social connectivity is concerned, the Wildfire will find social butterflies glued. A dedicated application for Twitter, Facebook, Peep and YouTube among others says you won’t have to go far to satisfy those itching fingers. The FriendStream shortcut let us update our status right away when signed in to our social network. The HTC Wildfire handset is good at handling multi-windows though images took a little longer than we would have liked to load. Getting through regular emails wasn’t much of a hassle too with QuickOffice upfront about identifying various file formats. Like most multimedia phones, the audio capability of the handset is on borderline. A more or less complete Music Player and decent sound output was jarred by the integrated speaker getting a little stannic with songs in the higher range. The phone does include FM radio support as well. The implanted Android platform brings with it a plethora of applications and you can instantly hop onto the Android Market lest you fall short. The included Flashlight application is quite bright and uses the camera flash to emit light in dark situations.

The HTC Wildfire has been fitted with a 5 megapixel camera cum camcorder complete with auto focus and flash. There’s also the option of Geotagging photos immediately with a wide choice of settings possible prior to capturing images. The camera will suffice basic capturing needs and nothing more, and video quality too is not something that can be boasted about. The video interface allows full screen view though and includes a direct shortcut to record videos. The phone is quick to be recognized when plugged via USB to the PC with speedy file transfers. Keeping Wi-Fi and GPS satellite search on, the phone got us through just a day of moderate usage. We did also witness an odd lag when switching between homescreens loaded with widgets.

Pros:

A complete smartphone and more that won’t have you searching for applications and features.

The optical trackpad is a nice inclusion and ensures you don’t rely on fancy swipes to get going with the phone.

The form factor is compact and pocket-friendly.

Cons:

A less than 1 day battery life will annoy those looking for more fun when on the move.

The clutter of applications can get you confused and HTC could have helped by having them in a more organized manner.

HTC hasn’t really done anything revolutionary with the Wildfire, though it’s a neat fit in the touchscreen terrain. Its full demeanor is well complemented by a near about full feature and functionality list though there is a hard to ignore resemblance to the HTC Desire. The phone could have been a wee bit better with the voice quality too and the screen isn’t at its best when in bright light. All said and done, at Rs. 15,300, the phone may be a bit expensive for regular users. On a scale of 1 to 10 our rating for this phone reads at 8.

Lemon Mobiles iT 717 Review: An affordable dual-SIM phone designed to impress 3 komentar

Lemon Mobiles iT 717 Review
The picture of Lemon Mobiles promoting their iQ 707 and iT 717 phones back in May this year is fresh in our minds. The company hit the ‘Need for Speed’ theme pretty right with the checkered racing flags. The company’s iT 717 got us busy with its antics last week and we thought Dale Carnegie’s popular quote ‘If life gives you lemons, make lemonade’ may befit this new product. Except that squeezing out a review instead of lemonade was what we decided to do with this ‘Lemon’ offered to us. ‘Not another iPod look-alike for a phone!’ we found ourselves exclaiming as we saw the picture of the iT 717 on the carton we received. The Touch ‘N’ Play tagline though that was inscribed neatly on the big black box parking itself on our desks diverted attention almost instantly.

What popped out on ripping the package open was a phone nestled on a black cardboard much like a king seated on his throne. Beneath this were other assortments which included a set of earphones, the warranty card, user guide, pen tailored stylus, the charger and a phone case. The phone has a decent hue of black and silver paint; though it’s overtly glossy appearance takes away from what could have been a very nicely crafted device. You’d only be ignorant if you missed the very obvious reference to Apple’s iPod in design. In a full rounded demeanor with neat curves along the edges, the phone is fitted with a large 3” touchscreen and despite this it bears a very lightweight profile. Our innately tech instincts saw us dropping the bundled user guide as soon as we’d picked it up thanks to its befuddling comprehension of features.

Right below the screen is the main circular button for OK / spanning through the various homescreens. It is surrounded by the call answer and call reject buttons on either sides with the latter also functioning as the power on/off button. Just in between all of this is the word lemon inscribed in a silver grey shade. A speaker grille features right above the screen and the phone’s edges are bare except for the left one which is embedded with volume control keys and the lower edge holding the headphone/USB port. The complete jet piano black finishing on the back of the phone looks like it’s been planted a wet one by the white and green lemon logo. The top area of the rear side holds a 3.2MP camera lens next to which is a more defined speaker mesh. We loved the accompanying soft velvety black case which gave the handset a snug fit barring the fact that it was a magnet for dust and dirt. Getting two SIM cards into their distinct slots was effortless, though the act had us doubting the back flap’s durability.

As we dived into the iT 717, the ‘Slide to Unlock’ on its homescreen reminded us of you know who, the iPhone of course. The phone lit up and seemed to be quite a bright chap literally with its very vibrant resistive screen. We could customize up to 3 homescreens with a maximum of 9 widgets. The left margin of the screen held a list of shortcuts that could be dragged and dropped onto the desired homescreens. The bottom most area of the display had the menu, call dial, contacts, messaging and settings function. The menu is arranged in a 3 x 4 matrix and hovering your finger or the stylus on an icon, gets it to standout like a bubble alluring you to hit on it. The features wrapped on to this phone are very conventional and there’s nothing that’s out of the box as such with your regular File Manager, Call center, Messages, Multimedia attributes among others. But the fact that you get all of them at the price this phone is offered makes it a forerunner in the value-for-money bracket.

We started off by sending messages through the virtual QWERTY keypad and while it isn’t the best of the breed, it’s decent nevertheless. Having full support for special characters, if you must you can also send messages in Hindi. Despite all the settings we went through, getting the browser up and running was quite annoying and we lost connection quite often. The things you can do when browsing the web are very basic and the phone lacks proper navigation even with the stylus. When we tried accessing our Gmail account in what seemed like eternity, the browser showed an unsupported scripts error. The installed version of Opera Mini was no better in terms of performance. For games, the company puts in a Puzzle and Magic Sushi. While the former requires you to complete Lemon Mobiles logo from the jigsaw pieces, the latter was borrowed from Bejeweled with the only difference being food in the place of jewels.

Neither the audio nor the display of the games are worthy of any mention. With a committed Facebook, Twitter, MSN and Nimbuzz application for company, the handset is though quite complete on the connectivity front. The Organizer features a World Clock among the regular Calendar, Tasks, Alarm, Notes and more. The Extras section includes a Health function that keeps a tab on BMI along with an Ebook reader and Answering machine feature, all of which are very thoughtful inclusions. The Multimedia section of the phone holds attention with the 3.2MP snapper minus autofocus and flash. You can however capture images in a maximum size of 2048 x 1536. Being able to tweak the white balance, a number of scene modes and effects are also included for the amateur photographer’s pleasure. The quality of both still images and videos is just about passable. What’s good though is that all these options and more are up on the screen within reach when you enter the camera mode. Also you can personalize captured content through the Photo Editor which packs in the option of adding a frame, text, icon and others.

Audiophiles should find solace in FM radio complete with the ability to record what’s playing on FM and a Melody composer. The bundled earphones too, do a fair job for on-the-go audio. Unlike the manual which says you’d be warned when the battery on the phone drains out, it was much the opposite. Besides obviously going off on its own without any hint, the phone just wouldn’t switch on even after it had received 30 minutes of power. It took a refresh of the battery from its compartment to get the phone running again. The iT 717 handset satiated us with a one day battery life on medium usage.

Pros:

It’s a full touchscreen with dual SIM capabilities and that surely puts it a notch above its counterparts at the price point that it is offered.

The screen is by far the high spot of the phone. As bright as Lemon could get, it’s vibrant to the hilt.

Cons:

The unresponsiveness of the touchscreen makes it as much of a downer as it is an upside.

The build appears to be on the cheaper side with the back flap actually very frail when we had it off.

There’s no dedicated space on the phone to hold the stylus and the chassis could have also included a 3.5mm port.

With impressive externals, the iT 717 phone could have done with better innards too. While the display is surely the talking point on the phone, it would have helped by being a wee bit more responsive. It’s a rat race in the touchscreen market and the huge competition has pushed back the average price of a fully functional phone. There’s no denying that this phone does break the price point of a complete touchscreen phone but how well the poor quality of its very vital organ would go down with most mobile enthusiasts is worth pondering about. You may consider picking up this Lemon Mobiles offering if you’re looking for a basic phone with full touch capabilities. We mark the handset at a good 7.5 out of 10.

Klipsch Image S4i earphones with mic 0 komentar

Klipsch Image S4i earphones with mic
The Klipsch Image S4i earphones offer exceptional sound quality for the money. They're also very comfortable and, the package includes a few handy extras such as a storage box and cleaning tool. Plus, there's a call answer button, mic, and iPod playback controls integrated into the cord.

The bad: The cable of the Image S4i earphones is pretty thin and tangle-prone, and the included eartips may not work for everyone.

The bottom line: The Klipsch Image S4i earphones offer up sound quality on par with and better than sets that cost many times as much, and they include compelling extras for iPhone and iPod users.

Review:
The Klipsch Image S4i earphones are nearly identical to their sibling, the Image S4. They provide the same comfortable fit and stellar sound quality, but also offer the added bonus of an integrated mic and call answer button, as well as volume controls and remote playback for the iPod. Call quality through the inline mic is solid, though not overly spectacular for a wired headset. At $99, the Image S4i costs $20 more, which is probably worth it for those with an iPhone. Flip UltraHD (black) 0 komentar

Flip UltraHD (black)
Shoots 720p HD video; high-quality video for its class; easy to use; uses rechargeable AA batteries; FlipShare software compatible with both Mac and Windows machines.

The bad: Somewhat pricey; no memory card slot; no cable included for HD output to HDTVs.

The bottom line: The Flip Video UltraHD may not be the sexiest mini camcorder out there, but it offers a respectable feature set and some of the best video we've seen from this type of cheap, YouTube-friendly camcorder.
Review:

Every six months or so, Flip Video--slated to be absorbed by Cisco by the end of the year--puts out a new model or two of its popular YouTube-friendly point-and-shoot mini camcorders. Late last year it was the MinoHD. Now, for spring 2009, the company brings us two updated versions of the Ultra: a higher-end model, the UltraHD, which shoots 720p (1,280x720) high-definition video, and a less expensive Ultra, which shoots 640x480 VGA video.

Apple iPad (16GB) 0 komentar

Apple iPad (16GB)
The good: In an act of aggressive tech convergence, Apple has consolidated your Netbook, e-reader, gaming device, photo frame, and iPod into an elegant, affordable supergadget. Features such as Bluetooth, 802.11n Wi-Fi, movie rentals, 10 hours of battery life, optional 3G wireless, and the most-celebrated App Store on the planet have us pretty worked up.

The bad: The iPad's large size is as much a hindrance as it is an advantage. As a jack-of-all-trades and a master of few, the iPad can't entirely mimic many of the specialized products it seeks to replace. The iPad's lack of front or rear cameras, Flash support, and integrated HD video output already have us pining for next year's model.

The bottom line: The Apple iPad is the first affordable tablet computer worth owning, but it won't (yet) replace your laptop.

Vizio M260VA Television Review–Lower End Value 0 komentar

Vizio M260VA Television Review–Lower End Value
We’ve had a good week so far–and happy Thanksgiving to everybody in our United States readership–so today we’re going to carry on with another low-cost television to fire you up for that bargain hunting romp tomorrow, the Vizio M260VA.

The Vizio M260VA is a twenty six inch 720p LCD television that offers SRS TruSurround and SRS TruSurround HD, ambient light sensing technology, a one hundred seventy eight degree viewing angle, two three watt speakers, two HDMI ports, one component video input, one RF input, one PC input, a headphone jack and a USB port.

Nothing overwhelming, of course–nothing big or expensive here. It’s a 720p, which means the picture will be good but not terrific. Three watt speakers don’t give off a really terrific sound, but you’ll be able to make out the dialogue and you’ll definitely know when something’s blowing up. But there’s a limit here and you’ll reach it a whole lot sooner than if you were using fifteen watt speakers with Dolby decoders.

If you keep your expectations in line, you should be at least reasonably satisfied with this very bargain priced piece. How very bargain priced, you wonder? Try two hundred and nine dollars. Now that puts the whole thing in a different light.

The Vizio M260VA isn’t the best LCD television on the market, but it’ll handle the basics pretty well.

Apple Launches iOS 4.2, Brings Multitasking to iPad
Apple today launched iOS 4.2, the latest version of their mobile operating system that brings multitasking and other new features to the iPad tablet.

iOS 4.2 is available for download to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch now.

Here’s the press release:

Apple® today announced that iOS 4.2, the latest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, is available today for download for iPad™, iPhone® and iPod touch®. iOS 4.2 brings over 100 new features from iOS 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 to iPad including Multitasking, Folders, Unified Inbox, Game Center, AirPlay® and AirPrint.

“iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit.”

iPad users can now run their favorite apps and switch between them instantly, while preserving iPad’s legendary battery life. Users can organize their apps with drag-and-drop simplicity using Folders, and Mail now features a Unified Inbox, fast inbox switching and a threaded message view.

Game Center allows iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users to challenge and play friends or be matched automatically with new opponents, showcase their scores and achievements, and discover new games their friends are playing.

AirPlay is a new feature for streaming music, video and photos wirelessly from iPad, iPhone and iPod touch to Apple TV®, transforming Apple TV into a great accessory for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. iOS users also will be able to use AirPort Express® and AirPlay to stream wirelessly to any stereo or powered speakers, or directly to AirPlay-enabled speakers coming to market in the months ahead.

AirPrint is a next-generation Wi-Fi print architecture that dramatically simplifies printing by completely eliminating printer drivers. AirPrint enabled printers including the HP Photosmart, HP LaserJet Pro and HP Officejet will be the first to support printing direct from iOS devices. iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly to any printer that supports AirPrint.

The Find My iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) feature is now free to use without a MobileMe? subscription and helps you locate your missing device.* The Find My iPhone app is a free download on the App Store? and lets users easily locate a missing device on a map and have it display a message or play a sound. Users can even remotely lock or wipe data from a lost device to protect privacy.

Other new features that iOS 4.2 brings to the iPad include: the ability to rent TV episodes directly to iPad using the iTunes® App with a 30 day viewing window and a 48 hour session window once playback is started; the ability to easily find and highlight specific words and phrases on web pages in Safari®; enhanced enterprise support so businesses can take advantage of stronger security features, new device management capabilities and improved enterprise integration; industry-leading accessibility enhancements; and support for 25 additional languages, including Korean, Portuguese and Traditional Chinese.

LG 26LD350 Television Review–Surprisingly Good For the Price 0 komentar

We carry on with the look at lower priced televisions to get you fired up for Black Friday shopping with a look at the LG 26LD350, a surprisingly nice, if somewhat smaller, LCD television.

The LG 26LD350 is a twenty six inch 720p LCD television that offers a one hundred seventy-eight degree viewing angle, two seven watt speakers with Dolby Digital decoder and Infinite Sound technlogy, Clear Voice II technology, a variety of AV modes, 24p Real Cinema, Picture Wizard technlogy, SimpLink technology which controls all your LG devices in one remote, two HDMI ports, one component input, one composite input, one RF input, one PC input, one PC audio input, one digital audio output, one USB port and one headphone jack.

Like I said, smaller but still fairly nice. Sure, 720p video will never be anyone’s idea of an incredible picture, but it’s still within tolerances. And the video is a little better than normal–seven watts per speaker isn’t much at all, but when backed up with a Dolby Digital decoder, it certainly helps. And there are plenty of ports for old and new hardware alike, making this a good starter television.

And of course, like I said, the price is going to be one that’ll make you think twice as you can find the LG 26LD350 on Amazon for three hundred dollars.

So basically, you’ll get a surprisingly good quality television here for not a whole lot of cash, and that makes it one to consider even if it isn’t Black Friday.

Vizio Maintains Spot as Top US TV Manufacturer, Now Has 30% of Market 0 komentar

While companies like Sony and Samsung have been big name HDTV manufacturers for some time, Vizio is making quite the name for itself. In fact, it seems that Vizio has managed to maintain its spot as the top TV in the United States with a surprisingly high 30% market share. To put matters into persepctive, Vizio says that they have shipped 160,000 more televisions in the United States than its closet competitor.

Pretty amazing considering Vizio came out of seemingly no where and then proceeded to dominate the market. This just goes to show you that if you make a good product and price it competitively it is going to sell despite competition from big name companies.

What kind of television do you have? Are you part of the 30% that owns a Vizio? Let us know in the comments

LG LX6500 3D LED TV With 4 Active-Shutter Glasses for $1375 0 komentar

Looking for a good deal to get your holiday season started right? Well, look no further. It has just been made known that online-megaretailer Amazon.com has put the LG LX6500 47-inch 3DTV up for $1375 – down from a price tag of $2000. But it doesn’t stop there, Amazon is also throwing in 4 pairs of active-shutter glasses for free when each normally retail for $125 a piece.

Seeing how 3DTVs are traditionally ridiculously expensive especially when you factor in all of the required accessories like active-shutter glasses and a 3D Blu-ray player, this is quite a breath of fresh air. Add to the fact that it’s such a high quality 3D LED TV from LG and the deal gets even sweeter.

Anyone looking to pick somethign like this up for the holidays?

Haier HL32D2 Television Review–Solid If Unspectacular 0 komentar

Haier HL32D2 Television
We carry on with our look at inexpensive televisions just ahead of Black Friday by taking a look at the Haier HL32D2, and you’ll be surprised that a television that doesn’t cost so much can still provide a decent value.

The Haier HL32D2 is a thirty two inch 720p LCD television that offers two ten watt speakers, AVL auto volume leveler systems to keep the volume stable for those times when you suddenly go from a quiet television show to the screeching horror that is some commercials, an AV input, two component inputs, two HDMI inputs, and a USB input. which provide a simple solution for high quality audio and video input. The USB input can be used for audio and digital pictures. Included with the TV is a full function remote control and swivel stand.

Thankfully, the picture on this one is pretty nice–nothing great, of course, 720p prevents anything really fantastic. And the sound quality isn’t the greatest either but the auto volume system is definitely a welcome addition.

Considering that the Haier HL32D2 is selling for $343.38 out at Amazon, it’s not at all surprising that it’s not a top-notch piece, but it’s at least fairly decent.

So if you’re looking for a new television, are very price-conscious, and don’t mind settling for a little less in the quality department, then the Haier HL32D2 might be just what you’re after.

LaCie FastKey SSD USB 3.0 delivers up to 260MB/s speeds in a tiny profile 0 komentar

LaCie FastKey SSD USB 3.0 delivers up to 260MB/s speeds in a tiny profile
It doesn’t take more than a couple of minutes to have files transferred to and fro most flash drives when working in bulk. It’s with the much lighter and lesser data that these few minutes seem long. LaCie suggests having a look at its very new SSD USB 3.0 drive, FastKey to take care of that. It reaches a maximum delivery speed of 260MB/s and is just 26cm3 in size.

Transfer speeds will be the least among users’ worries with this new SSD drive. In a design that makes it tiny enough to sit in the palm, the drive is reportedly capable of transferring 1000 mp3 or five DivX files under 60s. Performing nearly 10 times faster than traditional USB 2.0, the coupled SSD USB 3.0 capability of the drive along with the DRAM cache technology allows fast behavior.

“With most flash drives, transferring a large number of photos and mp3 files can take a few minutes,” commented Luc Pierart, Business Unit Manager, Personal Storage, LaCie. “With the Fastkey, transferring small files is immediate. You can back up or share your music and photo libraries as you head out the door.”

The sleek drive is just about 26cm3 in size which is complemented by the powerful solid-state flash technology. Encased by a sturdy aluminum cover, data is both safe and mobile. With no space wasted the flash drive bundles in a capacity of around 120GB. The strap should allow users to fasten the drive to a keychain or bag minus any hassles.

While the tailoring ensures users’ data is protected externally, the internal makeup of the drive also safeguards content. The included AES 256-bit encryption software maintains data security. All users need to do is pick the amount of capacity that they wish encrypt. They can then reach it via custom password. The drive’s entire capacity can also be encrypted for complete privacy. Wuala’s 4GB secure online storage gives users added storage and sharing options.

Available in 30GB, 60GB and 120GB storage capacities, the LaCie FastKey is offered at a price starting from $149.99. [http://www.techshout.com]

Acer Aspire AS 5742-7645 Review 2 komentar

The Acer Aspire AS5742-7645 ($649.99 list), a Costco laptop, follows the basic script for successfully putting together a low-end mainstream laptop. It comes fitted with Intel’s Core i3 processor, which provides great bang for the buck, sitting at the bottom rung of Intel’s current mobile processor ladder. The CPU has a standard 4GB memory, coupled with integrated Intel graphics.

The only core component that comes as a surprise is the 500GB hard drive, which is bigger than the 320GB drives generally found in competing models, such as the Sony VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ ($629.99, 4.5 stars)- the current Editors’ Choice for the budget laptop category. The VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ, however, counts wireless HDMI and WiMAX broadband capabilities among its major attractions. These features are not found on the Aspire AS5742-7645. Still, if you can make due with a wired HDMI connection and 802.11n Wi-Fi, the Acer Aspire AS5742-7645 is something not to be overlooked.

It offers great performance for the price, comes backed with a two-year warranty, and runs nearly an hour longer and weighs a smidge lesser than the award-winning Sony.

Design
The Acer Aspire AS5742-7645’s design won’t stop you as you scroll down the wide aisles of Costco. The laptop features a basic (read: boring) black plastic chassis, which has a textured design on the keyboard deck and a lid that resembles mesh or cross-hatching. The plastic feels thin, flexing in spots underneath your palms and fingertips while typing.

The thin plastic chassis of the laptop makes it weigh a few ounces lighter than the Sony EB33FM/BJ; The AS5742-7645 weighs 5 pounds, and the Sony weighs 5.4 pounds.

More

I generally like chiclet-style or island keyboards, where each key is isolated. The AS5742-7645’s keyboard is roomy, but the keys are very thin and flimsy, particularly if you don’t hit each key at dead center. Unlike most island-key designs, where the keyboard tray comes up to the bottom edge of the keys, here the keyboard tray appears to be sunken down. Ultimately, leaving wide gaps between the keys and around the edges of the keyboard, making it more prone to dust and dirt accumulation beneath the keys. I prefer the island keyboard of the Sony EB33FM/BJ; the keys are more firm and doesn’t have the wide spaces between and underneath the keys where grime can collect.

A dedicated number pad to the right of the keyboard results in a few keys being shortened, namely the Ctrl keys, the Tab key, and the four arrow keys, which are half the normal height. The Acer AS5742-7645 lacks media control keys and requires you to use the Function keys to adjust the volume and control your media.

One of the few drawbacks I found in the Sony EB33FM/BJ was its loud, clacky mouse buttons. But, you won’t turn heads in the coffee shop with each mouse click on the AS5742-7645, yet it’s not an ideal setup either. The laptop features a single, rocker-style mouse button. It’s quite firm to press unless you are clicking on either end of the button. The touchpad is responsive that features a matte surface and support for multi-touch gestures, such as, two-finger scrolling and pinch zooming.

The 15.6-inch widescreen display of the AS5742-7645 laptop has a standard resolution of 1366 by 768. The screen is bright, with vivid colors and crisp edges, particularly during our test running 720p HD movie trailers on Apple’s site. The laptop’s stereo speakers are merely adequate, but that’s common amongst most budget models. You’ll also want to keep a pair of headphones or a set of external speakers. A 1.3-megapixel Webcam is just above the display.

Features
An HDMI connection is the highlight of a standard collection of ports, which includes 3 USB 2.0 ports, a VGA port, the Ethernet jack, and the multi-format media card reader. The Sony EB33FM/BJ features these ports and slots in addition to an eSATA port and a 34 slot ExpressCard. The VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ also serves the Intel Wireless Display (WiDi), which let’s you send video and audio signals from the laptop to the HDTV’s HDMI port without the need for cables.

The Sony EB33FM/BJ also trumps the AS5742-7645 in terms of networking. It provides WiMAX for city-wide mobile broadband coverage (with an accompanying $40 monthly subscription), while the AS5742-7645 provides only the basics: Wired Ethernet and 802.11n Wi-Fi connections.

The AS5742-7645 also has the advantage in hard drive capacity, delivering 500GB (5,400rpm) of storage space to the Sony EB33FM/BJ’s 320GB. But, the Acer’s hard drive comes with its fair share of bloatware. Power the laptop on for the first time, and you’ll find it littered with desktop icons for trial offers for Netflix, McAfee Internet Security Suite, and Norton Online Backup. There’s also a shortcut for eBay, because typing those four letters into your browser can be such a chore. You’ll also find the Barnes & Noble Desktop Reader and The New York Times Reader, which is good only if you have a Times subscription.

I was doubly impressed with the warranty. Typically, a consumer laptop is backed by one year of parts-and-labor coverage. One of the advantages of buying a laptop from Costco is that it comes backed with a two-year warranty.

Performance
With a 2.4GHz Intel Core i3-370M processor and 4GB of DDR3 memory, the AS5742-7645 turned in an admirable showing in the labs. It offers a clear performance advantage over the Pentium-class laptops that are priced near the $500 mark, such as Acer’s own Aspire AS5742Z-4097 ($499.99, 3 stars) and Gateway NV55C03u ($479.99, 3 stars). For instance, the Core i3-370M-based AS5742-7645 outflanked its Pentium P6100-based doppelganger, the AS5742Z-4097, by 23 percent on PCMark Vantage. It was also much faster than the AMD Turion II P540-based HP Pavilion dv6-3122us ($649.98 list, 3.5 stars), trouncing the dv6-3122us by a whopping 37 percent on PCMark Vantage, by 27 percent on our Handbrake benchmark test, and by 21 percent on our Photoshop CS5 test. The AS5742-7645 and Sony EB33FM/BJ posted similar scores through lab testing, which comes as no surprise owing to their similar configuration. In Anecdotal testing, Windows 7 Home Premium felt peppy and responsive, even under heavy multitasking scenarios. It has more than enough oomph for the vast majority of mainstream users.

It also has enough battery power for mainstream mobile users. The Aspire AS5742-7645 features a standard 6-cell (48WHr) battery, but it ran for 5 hours 24 minutes on our MobileMark 2007 battery test. That’s nearly an hour more than the Sony EB33FM/BJ’s time of 4 hours 33 minutes. However, we were impressed with Sony’s battery time. Meaning, we’re doubly impressed with the AS5742-7645’s battery life!

There is nothing to prevent a strong recommendation for the Acer Aspire AS5742-7645. Though its thin, plastic chassis reveals a bit of its budget status, but for home users who don’t expect to heap daily abuse upon the machine during commutes or treks to class, the laptop serves up as a useful, if not expensive, feature set. While strong performance, outstanding battery life, and long warranty being add-ons.

New HP Pavilion dm3t Review 0 komentar

HP Pavilion dm3t Review
Ultrathin and decked out in brushed aluminum, the HP Pavilion dm3t is one of the best looking notebooks of the year. In fact, it looks more expensive than its price tag would suggest (starting at $649; $839 as configured). And thanks to an Ultra-Low Voltage Intel processor, this Windows 7 system lasts all day on a charge while offering good performance compared to the competition. However, the sluggish touchpad on the dm3t makes this laptop more difficult to use than it should be.
Design

You don’t have to splurge for a $1,599 Envy 13 to get a notebook made with premium materials in HP’s lineup. Like its higher priced cousin, the Pavilion dm3t uses a combination of aluminum (on the deck and lid), while the bottom casing is made of aluminum alloy. We especially like the Moderno Argento gray finish and how it contrasts with the glossy black display bezel. This brushed metal looks a bit more modern than the ASUS UL30A, which has a lighter-colored aluminum lid but a plastic deck (albeit with a cool intersecting pattern).

The 4.2-pound dm3t is heavier than both the UL30 (4.0 pounds) and the Envy 13 (3.8 pounds), but because it omits a DVD drive, it measures just 1.0 inch thin; we had no problem slipping this laptop in a backpack.

HP took a minimalist approach to the rest of the design, and it mostly pays off. Like the Inspiron 14z, we like that dm3t skips dedicated multimedia keys and instead uses the top row on the keyboard for controlling playback and quickly adjusting things like brightness and volume—no function commands required. Other welcome touches include a red LED above the mute button (to let you know when it’s activated) and a touchpad lock button that changes from white to red when engaged. We just wish that the power button was up top for easy access; instead, it’s a switch on the right side.

This is the news released directly from the top of the Mountain View giant stage directly from IFA 2010 in Berlin which ended recently. The potential of this new Google project seems really interesting. Collaboration with some of the largest producers in the world of television, such as Samsung and Sony, will enable the transition from use in the PC than on TV.

Will be possible to reach the Internet from your TV, downloading content and much more possibly. The service will be offered in a totally free as is generally the case for the new Google proposed. For some reason, this particular 65-inch Theater 3D LCD HDTV has shown up on VIZIO’s website.

The screen is polarized for use of passive 3D glasses, which are ones that movie theaters use. These are cheaper than the battery powered shutter glasses.

There has been no official announcement, which is very crazy. However, I’m sure we’ll here more about this in time. The rumored price is to be about $3,699.

Jawbone’s New Jambox Bluetooth Speakers will Keep You Rocking—For a Price. 0 komentar

Yes, these new Jambox Bluetooth speakers from Jawbone do look a little bit like Legos and they are a bit pricey (okay so $200 each is a little bit more than a little pricey) but they’re slick, sophisticated, and create sound that rivals top-tier home theater systems. So if you want some of the best audio money can buy but have a wallet that’s a little shallower than you’d like it to be, these new speakers will get your crib pimped (or whatever lingo those young folks are using today) and keep your ears happy.

The speakers come with an integrated 800mAh lithium-ion battery that will last for better than average life (roughly 10 hours give or take) and a microphone that lets you use speakerphone and voice commands. It’s not going to rock the foundations of your ultra-cool crib (or disturb your parent too much) because the output maxes out at 85 decibels—slightly higher than those annoying Sunchip bags that just got pulled off the market.

However, if you decide you do want one of these snazzy new speakers (which come in four colors and shape designs) you’re going to have to do a little digging. At the moment they’re only available from the Apple store and “select” Best Buys across the country.

Check them all out (and several other models as well) at the official Jawbone website.

IOGEAR’s New Keyboards Make TV Viewing a Little Too Easy 0 komentar

If you’re like me, you’re probably easily frustrated when trying to use a standard TV remote to access/browse Netflix. It’s ridiculously time consuming and not to mention a bit antiquated. However, unless you want to drop a large amount of money on a fancy QWERTY remote or even more money on an ungainly near-full-sized keyboard, you really don’t have an option . . . until now. Thanks to the folks at IOGEAR, your TV navigation just got a whole lot easier.

They’ve released not one but two rather stylish little keyboards (equipped with trackballs no less) to help you waste time and drain your brain through your HTPC.

If micro is your thing, you’re going to love the new GKM571R. It’s tiny (a little bit bigger than the palm of your hand) and features a retro sort of styling reminiscent of a ColecoVision console but smaller. Its keys are also backlit so they’re easy to spot when you’ve got your mood lighting on.

If you need something a little bigger, either because you can’t see tiny or your fingers are too big to press little buttons, you’ll no doubt prefer the GKM581R. It’s ovoid and looks more like a traditional keyboard. It even sports several hotkeys to make you even more efficient/lazy.

You’re going to have to spend just under $100 to get one of these when they launch later this year ($99 for the GKM571r and $89 for the GKM581R) but convenience is something people love to pay for.

Intel’s New Solid State Drive Gets a $415 Price Tag 0 komentar

Posted by RobertP

If you’re in the market for a solid state drive and can’t wait a year or two until competition and market saturation drive prices down to a reasonable level, then perhaps you should consider Intel’s offerings a little more closely. Not only has the company dropped the price on it’s X25-M drives (at least the 80 and 120GB versions) but they’ve introduced a new, more capacious model that tips the scale at 120GB.

This model provides all the same benefits of its predecessors with a middle-of-the-road mentality. It’s not too much storage for most consumers but it’s not going to limit most folks and cause them to habitually decimate their movie collections just to free up space. It’s also semi-affordable at $275 per unit.

Betting that there’s a market for an SSD that’s just right, Intel has put a lot of marketing behind this puppy and is hoping that the reduced price tag combined with the more gracious amount of storage will open some wallets this holiday season. It’s by no means an entry level drive for an average computer user but if you’re someone who appreciates the safety, performance, and silence of an SSD, then you will appreciate this “bargain” offering from the digital storage giant.

You can visit the official Intel page to view all the benefits and features of their X25-M SSDs here.

Microsoft’s phones – Verizon revives The Kin 0 komentar

As previous rumors had suggested, the Kin One and the Kin Two are again part of the Verizon catalog. However, it is not yet clear if Verizon is giving a second chance to the Kin or if the company is only trying to get rid of the units that are available at its stores. Anyway, the truth is the Microsoft Kin is back.

The two new Kin phones have an additional “m” as part of their names and, apparently, the prices have been modified in an interesting way. The Kin One costs $20 with a two-year contract and the Kin Two costs $50 but is offered as part of a “buy one get one free” deal (the free phone is the LG Ally). The most important thing is that the Kin phones don’t require a data plan (or Internet plan) if you want to buy one. However, the available plans are starting as low as $40 for voice and $10 for a 25MB data plan (or $15 per month for 150MB). There is also an expensive $35 activation fee.

Initially, both phones required Internet plans (the Kin One had an initial price of $50 plus a data plan for $70), which was considered excessive for phones that are mainly targeted towards teenagers. The Zune Pass service is still present in both cases but only through Wi-Fi connections. Anyway, it is a good thing Verizon is finally realizing this type of phones should be sold with minimum requirements, especially when talking about money.

At this time, The Microsoft Kin is still considered one of the biggest failures this year, since it was taken off from the mobile market, after only three months of the launch. Actually, we are not very optimistic about the future of this line of mobile phones, even if Verizon has made some improvements to propitiate a second chance. We’ll see.

After all, the Windows Phone could be a better option and, usually, teenagers prefer to use smartphones with a wider range of features instead of mobile devices for a specific purpose.
