Sprint just got an Apple iPhone—sort of. The carrier on Wednesday announced the ZTE Peel, a case for the iPod touch that gives that device connectivity on Sprint's 3G network. With Skype, you can then make voice-over-IP phone calls on Sprint.
The Peel snaps onto the back of the iPod touch, and also functions as a Wi-Fi hotspot for two other devices. At 4.8 by 2.6 by 0.9 inches and 3.2 ounces, it adds significant thickness and weight to the slim PDA. You don't need to install any software, but it isn't clear from the announcement whether the touch connects to the Peel itself via Wi-Fi or whether there's something trickier going on involving the touch's dock port.
When it's connected, the Peel provides up to about 3 hours of Internet service on a charge. The Peel uses Sprint's EVDO Rev A network, which offers download speeds around 1 Mbps. In our 18-city test of mobile networks this past spring, we found Sprint's 3G network to be the most consistent of the four major U.S. carriers.
The Peel is compatible with the "second and third generation" iPod touch, according to Sprint's press release. As the current generation of the iPod touch is the fourth, it's unclear whether the device works with the current touch models.
The Peel will cost $79.99 with a $29.99 per month service plan, which gets you 1GB of data. There's no contract, but there's also no word on how you can get more data if you want it.
All four of the major U.S. carriers have started to sell Apple products and accessories recently. While AT&T is still the exclusive carrier for the iPhone, Verizon has started to aggressively bundle the iPad and a MiFi wireless hotspot, including running TV ads about the iPad. T-Mobile has started selling T-Mobile-branded iPod charging cables in its stores.
